22nd Annual US Research Tour

19th – 25th May 2018

Our 22nd annual IT Leaders Research Tour was held between Monday 21st and Friday 25th May 2018.

The feedback we received was exceptional – with 50% of delegates returning from a previous tour, this years event was regarded as ”…the best ever…”

New location

This year, we moved our base from The Fairmont Hotel, San Jose to the Stanford Park Hotel in Menlo Park.  This significantly reduced travel time during the week, and provided better access to facilities in Palo Alto within easy walking distance from the hotel.

Our delegates

Participants in our event join an esteemed alumni and are encouraged to engage with each other during and after the research tour, to seek and to share experiences and challenges with each other that as senior IT Leaders, they are faced with or have had to deal with.

Delegates came from FTSE 30, 100 and 250 cross-sector organisations, and included representatives from KPMG, the Bank of England, Baillie Gifford, Brown Brothers Harriman, the Ministry of Defence and more.

The brief

This years’ theme was ‘Digital Enablement’. We sought insight into the latest developments that address the key pillars of running a Digital Business.

As in previous years, there were some strong recurrent themes, with domains reaching new levels of maturity, such as: Data and Analytics; the Cyber arms-race; and Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.  Other, previously emerging themes have now just become accepted as the norm: velocity of change; cloud first; open source; everything (as a service); DevOps and software-defined infrastructure (including VM, containers, server-less, etc.).

New themes this year included: the hunt for the next big wave in core platforms; the challenge of simply keeping up; cloud/Internet scale at low cost; and the cognitive enterprise.
